Night Guards for Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)

Samad Dental Studio: Night Guards for Bruxism

If you frequently wake up with headaches, jaw stiffness, or have noticed excessive wear on your teeth, you may be suffering from bruxism (teeth grinding). At Samad Dental Studio, we offer custom-fitted night guards—the essential, non-invasive solution to protect your dental health and provide much-needed relief from grinding and clenching.

What Are Custom Night Guards?

A night guard is a durable, custom-made oral appliance, usually made from high-quality clear acrylic, worn over the upper or lower teeth during sleep. Unlike inexpensive, one-size-fits-all guards found in drugstores, our professional night guards are precisely crafted from digital impressions of your mouth. The appliance acts as a physical cushion, absorbing the forces of grinding and clenching and distributing pressure evenly, which protects the enamel from wear and helps relax the jaw muscles (Temporomandibular Joint, or TMJ).

Benefits of Custom Night Guards

Prevents Tooth Damage and Wear

Night guards create a crucial barrier that prevents tooth-to-tooth contact, halting enamel erosion, chips, cracks, and severe tooth flattening caused by grinding.

Reduces Headaches and Jaw Pain

By reducing the strain on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and jaw muscles, a night guard can significantly decrease the frequency and intensity of morning headaches, earaches, and facial pain.

Protects Existing Restorations

A night guard acts as an insurance policy for your dental investments, protecting expensive restorations such as crowns, veneers, bridges, and fillings from fracture caused by excessive biting forces.

Improves Sleep Quality

Though the grinding itself may continue, the cushioning effect leads to reduced muscle tension and a more relaxed jaw posture, which can contribute to deeper, more restful sleep.

Our Custom Night Guard Process

Comfort and Precision Getting a custom night guard at Samad Dental Studio is simple and non-invasive, taking two appointments:

Step 1

Diagnosis and Impression

The dentist examines your teeth for signs of wear and discusses your symptoms (headaches, clicking jaw). We then take comfortable digital scans or physical impressions of your teeth to ensure a highly accurate fit.

Step 2

Lab Fabrication

We send the precise mold to a specialized dental laboratory, where the night guard is fabricated using durable, biocompatible acrylic materials, tailored to the specific hardness needed for your level of bruxism.

Step 3

Fitting and Adjustment

You return for the second appointment to try on the final appliance. We make fine adjustments to the guard to ensure it fits securely, comfortably, and does not interfere with your bite alignment.

Step 4

Usage and Care Instructions

We provide detailed instructions on how to wear, clean, and store your night guard, ensuring maximum protection and longevity of the appliance.

Who is an Ideal Candidate for a Night Guard?

You should consider treatment if you exhibit the following symptoms or signs:

Chronic Headaches or Migraines

If you frequently wake up with dull headaches, neck pain, or stiffness in your jaw or face.

Diagnosed Bruxism

If your partner hears you grinding your teeth at night, or if the dentist observes significant, excessive wear on your tooth surfaces.

Recurrent Chipping or Fractures

If you have repeatedly chipped teeth or fractured dental restorations (fillings or crowns) without obvious trauma.

Symptoms of TMJ Disorder (TMD)

If you experience clicking, popping, limited jaw opening, or soreness around the jaw joint.

Cost and Insurance Information

Cost and Insurance for Night Guards While a custom-fitted night guard is a greater investment than a boil-and-bite guard, the cost is minimal compared to repairing teeth damaged by years of grinding. Because bruxism is a medical condition, some dental insurance plans—and occasionally even medical insurance plans (if related to a TMJ disorder)—will cover a portion of the cost. Samad Dental Studio will help you determine your coverage to ensure this essential preventive tool is accessible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a custom night guard comfortable to wear?

Yes. While there is a short adjustment period, custom guards are thin, precisely trimmed, and designed to fit securely without gagging or excessive bulk, making them far more comfortable than over-the-counter options.

Depending on the severity of your grinding, a custom night guard can last anywhere from 5 to 10 years. We monitor its wear at every check-up and advise you on the best time for replacement.

We strongly advise against it. Stock or boil-and-bite guards can sometimes worsen grinding, irritate your gums, and even shift your bite over time, potentially exacerbating TMJ pain.

It should be cleaned every morning with a toothbrush and mild soap or non-abrasive toothpaste. We also recommend periodic soaking in a specialized cleaning solution.
