Samad Dental Studio: Deep Cleaning (Scaling and Root Planing)

If you have been diagnosed with early to moderate periodontitis (gum disease), a Deep Cleaning, also known as Scaling and Root Planing (SRP), is the critical first step in treatment. At Samad Dental Studio, we perform this essential procedure with the utmost care, utilizing local anesthesia to ensure comfort while thoroughly removing the infection and calculus hiding beneath your gumline to prevent future tooth loss.

What is Scaling and Root Planing (SRP)?

Deep Cleaning, or SRP, is a non-surgical procedure performed to treat gum disease by meticulously cleaning the areas that a standard professional cleaning cannot reach.

  • Scaling: We remove hardened plaque and calculus (tartar) from the surface of the teeth and, crucially, from the root surfaces below the gumline, where the disease-causing bacteria reside.
  • Root Planing: The tooth root surfaces are then smoothed out. This smoothing step removes rough spots where bacteria and toxins tend to collect, allowing the gum tissue to potentially heal and reattach more firmly to the clean root.

This procedure is typically done in two or more separate appointments under local anesthetic for your comfort.

Benefits of a Deep Cleaning

Stops Bone Loss

Deep cleaning eliminates the harmful bacteria that cause chronic inflammation, which is the primary driver of jawbone deterioration and eventual tooth loss.

Eliminates Active Infection

The procedure removes the source of toxins and bacteria deep within the periodontal pockets, resolving active infection, gum bleeding, and swelling.

Reduces Chronic Inflammation

By reducing the inflammatory burden in the mouth, SRP can positively impact overall systemic health, particularly for patients managing conditions like diabetes and heart disease.

Fights Persistent Halitosis

Removing the odor-causing bacteria and debris trapped deep in the gum pockets effectively resolves chronic bad breath associated with gum disease.

Our Deep Cleaning Process

Thorough and Comfortable We prioritize gentle technique and patient comfort throughout the deep cleaning procedure:

Step 1

Local Anesthesia

Before starting, we administer local anesthesia (numbing shots) to ensure you feel absolutely no pain or discomfort during the procedure.

Step 2

Meticulous Scaling

The dental hygienist or dentist uses specialized instruments (manual and ultrasonic) to reach deep into the gum pockets and thoroughly remove all plaque and calculus.

Step 3

Root Planing

The root surfaces are smoothed and polished to ensure they are clean and free of toxins, creating a surface where the gums can healthily reattach.

Step 4

Medication and Aftercare

In some cases, we may apply localized antibiotic medication directly into the deepest pockets. We provide detailed aftercare instructions and schedule your follow-up appointment for periodontal maintenance.

Deep Cleaning

Who is an Ideal Candidate for Deep Cleaning?

A deep cleaning is necessary when routine cleaning is insufficient to treat the disease. You are an ideal candidate if a periodontal exam reveals:

Periodontal Pockets

Gum pockets measuring 4 millimeters or deeper, indicating bacteria accumulation and detachment of the gums from the tooth.

Chronic Bleeding and Inflammation

Persistent gum bleeding, redness, or swelling.

Bone Loss

X-rays show clear evidence of bone loss supporting the teeth.

Visible Subgingival Calculus

Presence of hardened tartar that has calcified onto the root surfaces below the gumline.

Cost and Insurance Information

Cost and Insurance for Deep Cleaning Deep cleaning (SRP) is a restorative procedure, meaning it is necessary to treat an existing disease, not merely a preventive service. Therefore, it is generally well-covered by most dental insurance plans, often at a higher percentage than basic cleanings. While the fee is higher than a regular cleaning, the cost of treating periodontitis with SRP is significantly lower than the costs associated with ignoring the disease, which leads to tooth extraction, bone grafting, and dental implants. We will verify your coverage and provide a detailed cost estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a deep cleaning painful?

No. The procedure is performed using local anesthesia, so you should not feel pain during the treatment. You may experience some soreness or mild sensitivity for a day or two afterward, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

A regular cleaning only treats plaque and tartar above the gumline. Once gum pockets deepen (4mm+), a regular cleaning cannot access the infection, and only SRP can remove the bacteria attached to the root surfaces.

No, SRP is a non-surgical procedure. Surgery is only recommended if the disease is too advanced and SRP fails to reduce the pocket depths adequately.

This is a specialized cleaning performed every 3–4 months after SRP. It is necessary because once you have periodontitis, the bacteria quickly return, and these frequent cleanings are required to keep the infection permanently under control.
