Samad Dental Studio: Periodontal (Gum Disease) Therapy

Gum disease (periodontitis) is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults and has serious links to systemic health issues like heart disease and diabetes. At Samad Dental Studio, our specialized gum disease therapy is designed to halt the progression of infection, stabilize your teeth, and preserve the crucial bone structure that supports your smile, ensuring your foundation remains strong.

What is Periodontal Therapy?

Periodontal therapy refers to a series of specialized treatments aimed at managing and eliminating infection and inflammation in the gum tissues and supporting bone structure around the teeth. Gum disease begins as Gingivitis (mild inflammation and bleeding gums), which is reversible. If left untreated, it progresses to Periodontitis, where bacteria spread below the gumline, leading to bone loss, receding gums, and ultimately, tooth mobility and loss. Our therapy focuses on removing the bacterial calculus (tartar) deep beneath the gumline.

Benefits of Gum Disease Therapy

Prevents Tooth Loss

By eliminating infection and halting bone deterioration, therapy stabilizes the teeth in their sockets, preventing the need for costly and complex extractions and replacements (like implants).

Eliminates Chronic Infection and Inflammation

Treatment removes the bacterial load causing the infection, resolving persistent symptoms like gum bleeding, swelling, and chronic bad breath (halitosis).

Protects Overall Systemic Health

Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition. Treating it reduces the burden of inflammation in the body, which can lower the risk factors associated with heart disease, stroke, and poorly controlled diabetes.

Stops Gum Recession

Therapy stabilizes the gums, preventing further recession and exposure of sensitive tooth roots.

Gum Disease Therapy Process

Scaling and Root Planing For most patients, the initial non-surgical therapy is a deep cleaning procedure called Scaling and Root Planing (SRP):

Step 1

Diagnosis and Pocket Measurement

We use specialized probes and X-rays to measure the depth of the gum pockets and assess the level of bone loss around each tooth.

Step 2

Numbing and Scaling

The area is thoroughly numbed with local anesthesia for comfort. Scaling involves carefully removing all plaque and hard calculus (tartar) both above and deep below the gumline.

Step 3

Root Planing

The root surfaces are smoothed (planed) to remove microscopic remnants of bacteria and toxins, allowing the gum tissue to reattach cleanly to the tooth root.

Step 4

Localized Antibiotics and Maintenance

In severe cases, antimicrobial agents may be placed directly into the deeper pockets. The most crucial step is establishing a strict ongoing maintenance schedule (Periodontal Maintenance) every 3 to 4 months.

Who is an Ideal Candidate for Gum Disease Therapy?

If you exhibit any of the following symptoms, you are an immediate candidate for a periodontal evaluation:

Bleeding Gums

Gums that bleed consistently when brushing or flossing (the earliest sign of gingivitis).

Gum Recession

Teeth that appear longer than normal due to the gum tissue pulling back.

Chronic Bad Breath (Halitosis)

Persistent bad odor caused by bacterial growth in the deep gum pockets.

Loose or Shifting Teeth

Teeth that feel mobile or have started to separate or move positions.

Cost and Insurance Information

Cost and Insurance for Gum Disease Therapy Periodontal therapy, including Scaling and Root Planing and subsequent Periodontal Maintenance visits, is considered medically necessary to restore health and prevent tooth loss. Therefore, these procedures are typically well-covered by most dental insurance plans, unlike cosmetic procedures. The out-of-pocket cost for a deep cleaning is far less than the cost of advanced surgical intervention, bone grafting, or replacing lost teeth later on. We will submit a detailed pre-treatment estimate to your insurance provider.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is gum disease curable?

Gingivitis (the early stage) is fully reversible with professional cleaning and improved home care. Periodontitis (the advanced stage) is not curable but is highly manageable and can be stabilized through diligent therapy and maintenance.

A regular cleaning addresses plaque and tartar above the gumline. A deep cleaning (SRP) involves meticulous scaling below the gumline to remove bacteria and smooth the tooth root surface.

No. We ensure the entire treatment area is completely numb using local anesthesia, guaranteeing your comfort throughout the procedure.

In patients with a history of periodontitis, the harmful bacteria repopulate the gum pockets much faster than in healthy patients. Frequent maintenance cleanings are crucial to keep the bacterial levels low and prevent bone loss recurrence.
